What does solid waste management mean?
Solid waste management is collecting, treating and disposing of solid wastes. Solid wastes can be domestic, agricultural or industrial. Pollution Control Board provides guidelines on the process of collection to disposal of solid wastes.
Recycling of recyclable solid wastes is recommended. However, there must be a proper process. Moreover, monitoring is a must.
As per the Central Pollution Control Board, the total solid waste in India is approximately 160,000 MT daily, of which 50% is treated, 18.4% reaches the landfill, and a huge 31.2% is unaccounted for.

Industrial wastes
Industrial wastes result from the production process. Some such industries which have industrial wastes are chemical plants, cement factories, power plants, textile, food processing, leather, plastic, iron & steel, fertiliser and petroleum industries.
They generate solid wastes like coal ash, blast furnace slag, gypsum, lime, tailings, steel melting slag, red mud, press mud etc. Pollution control board provides guidelines for the collection, handling, treatment and disposal of solid wastes.
MEP design consultants ensure that the Solid waste handling is as per the recommendations of the Pollution Control Board.
The MEP design consultants for industrial projects take a two-tier approach, i.e. Prevention of pollution and the control of pollution.
Where pollution prevention helps in waste minimising at the source, pollution control helps treat and properly dispose of waste. Disposal of waste depends on the type of waste, whether it is hazardous or non-hazardous—landfill, incineration and composting are the common waste disposal methods.
Effects of poor waste management
Poor waste management results in multiple harmful effects. Some of them are given below:
- Health Impact: Improper handling of solid waste may affect workers' health. This impact can be made minimal by proper training and education. Additionally, mixing medical and hazardous wastes increases the symptoms of many diseases.
- The impact on the environment: The improper disposal of solid waste results in groundwater pollution. Landfill wastes many times release harmful gases polluting the air. Sometimes, land wastes may also impact marine life.
Conclusion
The MEP design consultants for industries must ensure that they are updated with the regulatory norms issued by the Pollution Control Board.
