Reasons for Delays in Industrial Infrastructure Projects

Industrial projects are activities that involve multiple agencies, including industrial architects. Industrial architects play an important role in the successful completion of the project.

Construction projects are costly affairs. Delays in project completion usually have a cascading effect on the cost. Additionally, there is a loss of revenue due to delays in production.

Industrial projects invariably start with a design charrette, which ensures that all are on the same page.

What are the reasons for delays in industrial infrastructure projects?

Despite proper planning, projects may take more time to complete. Some of the common reasons are:

  1. Unachievable timelines: The project timelines must be realistic, or the project may be delayed.
  2. Change in scope: Changing the scope puts the project back.
  3. Incorrect cost estimates: Cost estimates must be realistic.
  4. Design deliverables: The industrial architects must give the deliverables on time.
  5. Project progress: When the project management consultants and project stakeholders should monitor the progress. This ensures prompt action in case of any backlogs.
  6. Communication: The communication between parties must be clear and precise. The stakeholders of the project and consultants must follow a proper communication protocol. Any difference of opinion must be ironed out.

Avoid delays during the design stage

Industrial architects must ensure proper and effective utilisation of the design phase. Some steps that can ensure proper and timely deliverables are:

  1. The project scope document should be the start of any project.
  2. Organizing design charette.
  3. Architects must document change requests.
  4. Architects must issue all drawings and documents of a discipline in one go, ensuring that the contractor has enough information for the project. The work should not stop due to the non-availability of drawings.
  5. Avoid delays during the tendering stage.

The tendering stage is a crucial stage for any project.

  1. The tender packages must be planned in the initial stage itself.
  2. Architects and engineers must release the tender packages on priority.
  3. Industrial architects must ensure that the tenders have clear, precise and sufficient information for the vendors to quote.
  4. Pre-qualification of vendors saves time.
  5. The tender should mention the key milestones.

Avoid delays during the implementation.

Some clients have a project team. In case they don't, a project management consultant is a solution.

Some steps that help avoid delay are:

  1. kick-off meeting helps the contractor to understand the project.
  2. Project tracking, periodic review meetings
  3. RFI
  4. Project snag-list at the fag end of the project
  5. Project completion certificate.

Finally, a project that completes on time is successful. A project fails due to the collective failure of all.
