Fire sprinkler systems and industrial projects

What are sprinkler systems?

Sprinkler systems are industrial fire protection consultants' most commonly used fire protection systems. Sprinkler systems form a part of the active fire protection system. They get activated by heat. A temperature of 135-165 deg F triggers the fire sprinklers with the increase in temperature, the bulb in the sprinkler breaks, releasing water. The fire gets doused.

The piping of the sprinkler system is filled with pressurised water. The sprinkler locations are designed for maximum coverage and as per codes.

What are the types of Sprinklers?

Sprinklers are of the following types:
  1. Wet type: The bursting of the bulb triggers the sprinkler head to release water.
  2. Dry-type sprinkler: This type of sprinkler is suited for cold climates. An electronically controlled valve releases the water from the piping system.
  3. Deluge type: The fire alarm activates the release of water. It is stopped manually by turning the valve. This sprinkler system is useful for industries that store and use flammable liquids.

The codes, and standards, and project requirements form the basis for designing. Industrial fire protection consultants use their expertise to design an optimized fire system.

The uses of Sprinkler systems

Sprinkler systems are one of the most commonly used fire safety systems. The benefits are:

  1. Suppress smoke and flames
  2. Sprinkler system contains fire
  3. The sprinklers reduce fire at the start of the fire itself.
  4. The sprinkler is activated locally- this helps reduce water loss in case of a false alarm.
  5. The sprinkler system helps safe evacuation of occupants during a fire incident.

The performance, however, is based on the maintenance of the sprinkler system. The sprinkler performance is based on :

  1. The characteristics
  2. Age of the system
  3. Proper maintenance
  4. Proper and adequately designed sprinkler system
  5. Well executed installation

Based on the local fire codes and standards, industrial fire safety design consultants design the sprinkler system.
