Role of structural consultants in industrial projects

Structural consultants face the task of deciding whether the building in industrial projects should be PEB or RCC. This decision can be taken only after considering the project requirements. Both RCC and PEB buildings have their advantages and disadvantages.

About a PEB building?

A PEB or a pre-engineered building is light gauge metal with roof panels on steel purlins with light gauge metal wall cladding. PEB structures are factory-fabricated and sent to the site in a knockdown condition. The structure is then erected at the site. One of the significant advantages of the PEB structure is the faster completion.

Structural Consultants in Industrial Projects

Do structural consultants prefer a PEB industrial building?

The PEB building has many pros. These advantages help the structural consultants in choosing. Some of the benefits are:

  1. The PEB structure is fabricated at the factory, ensuring good quality and consistency.
  2. The steel for the PEB structure is optimized.
  3. The manufacturer can predict the project timeline accurately.
  4. Chances of cost overrun and escalations are less.
  5. Foundations can be optimized in comparison to the RCC structure.
  6. Clear spans can be designed based on requirements.
  7. Expansions are easier and more cost-effective.
  8. PEB structures are lighter than conventional steel structures.
  9. Steel structures additionally help in resisting earthquakes.

What are the components of a PEB Structure?

Typically a Pre-engineered building consists of the following:

  1. The primary component consists of the Mainframe, columns, and rafters.
  2. Purlins, girts, and eave struts are secondary components.
  3. Sheeting or cladding: like Galvalume coated steel or aluminium sheets
  4. Accessories include windows, ridge ventilators, rolling shutters, skylight panels, trims, louvres, fascia, canopies, insulation, and a ladder with a safety cage.

In industrial projects, time often is a crucial factor. Structural consultants usually prefer PEB when the project must be completed in a tight schedule.
