What is Conceptual Design in Industrial Projects?

What is a conceptual design?

Conceptual design for industrial projects is the first step in designing industrial projects. The industrial Architects collect the inputs from the client. The architect and their team then transfer these ideas into sketches and designs during this stage. This stage means putting the ideas into sketches.

This conceptual design phase is an iterative process where the project team discusses the various ideas from the stakeholders. This design stage ends with everyone on the same page through a consensus.

Conceptual Design

The objective of conceptual design

This stage consists of converting the client's ideas into layouts and drawings. The architects prepare a plan for the project based on the project goals and constraints.

Stages in conceptual design

There are no demarcated stages; the conceptual design eventually evolves into a schematic design. The schematic design matures into the final design.

The project team has brainstorming sessions- the design charrette in this stage. The team typically has the project stakeholders, architects team, project management team, and process consultant.

Typically, this phase ends with narrowing down to one or two conceptual plans.

Some of the steps involved in the conceptual design phase are:

  1. The architect and his team collect inputs from the client.
  2. They attend brainstorming sessions, record the discussions, and help reach common project requirements.
  3. Develop the ideas into meaningful designs.
  4. Help in clear communication with the project team.
  5. They review budgets and timelines concerning project goals.
  6. They present the concept to the stakeholders.

Architect's deliverables of this stage

The key deliverables of this stage are:

  • Requirement document and project constraints
  • Conceptual Layout
  • Project cost estimates.

This stage is crucial in any project as it forms the basis of understanding the requirements. Hence, this stage must be given due importance.
