More about BIM or Building Information Modelling?

A 3D model of a building is called Building Information Modelling (BIM). BIM is a valuable tool for industrial architects and engineers. It helps to plan and design facilities and infrastructure. Software is easily available for creating the digital representation of the building.

BIM makes it is easy for architects and engineers to visualise the physical and functional characteristics. ISO 19650:2019 states that the BIM model is the use of a shared digital representation of a built asset to facilitate design, construction, and operation processes. It also helps the other project stakeholders (the clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors) to work within timelines and budgets. It is a good tool for multi-disciplinary coordination.

Advantages of BIM :

  1. BIM helps in providing a quick visual model. It provides an understanding for the client.
  2. Multi-disciplinary collaboration on BIM is faster and easier for architects and engineers.
  3. A BIM model ensures that there are fewer clashes between disciplines.
  4. The project team can create multiple BIM options and choose the best option.
  5. The BIM model helps in easy iterations across disciplines.
  6. The 3D model helps to check for bottlenecks.
  7. It is easier to get an accurate Bill of Quantity (BOQ).

Conclusion:

To conclude, the BIM model provides a common platform to collaborate and thus benefits the project. Architects, engineers, and industrial design consultants have found the BIM model a good tool.
