Steel Structure Detailing is an essential part of any industrial infrastructure design. Steel buildings are common in industries these days. The architect gives a concept, and the structural engineer provides the structural design. Additionally, the structural design consultants also give the fabrication drawing for the steel members.
Shop Drawings: These drawings are detailing of the structural components. Precise measurements are necessary. Typically, a shop floor drawing has the following details:
- Size
- Description of material
- Dimensions
- Surface Preparation
- Bolting
- Paint and finishing
- Welding
- Fabrication guidelines
Erection drawings: These erection drawings help in the erection of the building. Each part of the building is marked for clarity. The erection drawings has detailed information about erecting the structure.
Some of the other responsibilities of structural consultants are:
- Expertise and knowledge of steel standards.
- Approval of drawings given by vendors/ PEB manufacturers and checking for compliance with tender.
- Raising a RFI (Request for information) document in case inputs are needed.
- Replying to RFIs raised by the client, PMC or the vendor
The current day software helps the structural consultants in optimising the steel. These days, 3D designing software like Tekla, Revit, etc, are more advanced and improve workability and optimization.
